Super start Austrian women with two gold in Oberwart
Michaela Polleres and Bernadette Graf celebrated the gold medal today at the European Open in Oberwart. At Home both fighters won their weight classes in remarkable style. The Austrian cheered for the silver medal for Magdalena Krssakova U63kg.
Polleres prevailed in the final U70kg against the Slovenian Anka Pogacnik with a Waza-ari. On the road the final she defeated Canadian Hanako Kuno, German Mina Agneta Ricken (GER) and Taisia Kireeva of Russia, all by Ippon.
Bernadett Graf made her triumph with a final win over the Brazilian two-time World Champion Mayra Aguiar in the Golden Score. She overcame Nazerke Tileukhanova (KAZ) by ippon then defeated Christina Faber (GER) and in the semi-final against Unelle Snyman (RSA) in extra time.
Magdalena Krssakova lost in the final against Mongolian Gankhaich Bold by Ippon. The 38-year-old Sabrina Filzmoser narrowly missed a place on the podium after losing to Chinese Zhang Wen in the battle for third place.
Austria and Mongolia both won the medal table with two gold medals and silver. The Chinese women captured six medals with good for heavyweight Yu Song who seems to be back in her category defeating Santa Pakenyte (LTU) and strong Brazilians. Also Japan was successful with five medals including gold for Ryoko Takeda U52kg as she defeated Sosorbaram Lkhagvasuren of Mongolia in the final.
Mongolia started the day well with a gold medal for lightweight Narantsetseg Ganbaatar who was also in a good shape last week in Paris. Ganbaatar bested Yao Xiong of China in the final in quite a strong competition.
U57kg there was gold for Polish Anna Borowska after she defeated Olympic Champion Rafaela Silva in the final, the second lost final by the strong Brazilian women’s team. In this category there were 40 women at the start, by far more than any other category. Borowska won all her contests by ippon.
Austrian women's coach Marko Spittka was very satisfied with the performance of the Austrian ladies. "I'm really happy for the ladies. They worked very hard and were rewarded today. That's very nice to see. This is a great start to a number of competitions following after Oberwart, "said the coach.
