All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF) announced that double World Champion Ono Shohei (U73kg) canceled participation for the Grand Slam in Tokyo due to a lumbar injury. The doctor said that "His injury needs one-month of recovery."

Also both Shinji Kido (U60kg) and Haruka Tachimoto (U70kg) canceled the Grand Slam of Tokyo. It's because of the injury of the joint in the foot of Kido. Tachimoto cancelled due to her skin disease.

The announced substituted are Dai Aoki (U60kg), Kazuya Tamura (U73kg) and Erina Ike (U70kg). Although Ono became the world champion of this year it is not secure that he will represent Japan at the Rio Olympic Games. His nemesis Riki Nakaya also suffers a lumbar injury. Trauma to the low back lumbar spine is quite common. For Tachimoto it will become very tough to represent Japan at the Olympic Games. The intensity of the training efforts do not always pay out given the injuries.
