There is only one medal for Telma Monteiro

The Portuguese Judo Federation announced its team for the 2016 Olympic Games. This time Telma Monteiro is not seeded for Rio. An injury at the end of the year prevented her from fighting so far in 2016. Her last event was the Grand Slam of Paris in October 2015. The Portuguese star will go for her fourth Olympic Games, she debuted in 2004 in Athens and fought eight Olympic contests so far, but was much more ambitious. This fourth edition should bring her more luck.

Joana Ramos (U52kg), Telma Monteiro (U57kg), Sergiu Oleinic (U66kg), Nuno Saraiva (U73kg), Celio Dias (U90kg) and Jorge Fonseca (U100kg) are the Judoka that will represent Portugal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016. Miguel Vieira (U66kg / B1) is the representative of the Paralympic Games.

Joana Ramos competes U52kg, currently standing 14th in the world rankings. The Athlete of Sporting Clube de Portugal won in 2015, the Grand Slam Tyumen and two bronze medals at the Grand Prix of Budapest and Samsun.

Sergiu Oleinic is ranked 18th at the IJF World ranking U66kg. The Judoka showed great consistency, adding two bronze medals in Budapest and Samsun and two fifth places in the Paris Grand Slam and Grand Slam Tokyo. This year, he took the 7th place in the Grand Prix of Tbilisi and the 5th in the recent World Masters Guadalajara.

Nuno Saraiva fights U73kg. The young judoka of 22 years is in the 38th position in the world ranking, with the recent results he was awarded with the EJU quota place. He took a gold medal at African Open Casablanca, a silver medal at the Grand Prix of Tashkent and three bronze medals in Samsun, African Open Tunis and European Open Glasgow.

Celio Dias U90kg is the number 21 ranking. In 2015 he won the Casablanca African Open and the Grand Prix of Budapest, having also won a Bronze Medal in the prestigious Grand Slam of Paris. This year added another bronze medal at the Grand Prix Tbilisi.

Jorge Fonseca fights U100kg won two bronze medals in the Grand Slam of Baku and Grand Prix Zagreb in 2015. He returned to competition this year, achieving a bronze medal at the Grand Prix of Tbilisi, two fifth places in Düsseldorf and Samsun and a seventh in Paris.

So far Nuno Delgado was the only Portuguese who won an Olympic medal in 2000 in Sydney. In London in 2012 Portugal had a dramatic games with four athletes and just four matches. This team is a mix of experience and talent and should bring some action in Rio.
