Torchbearers of Paris 2024 Olympics: Loire-Atlantique to French Guiana

The journey of the Olympic flame has always been a symbol of unity and hope. In May 2024, an incredible 11,000 Torchbearers will join forces to carry the Olympic flame throughout France, marking the arrival of the Paris 2024 Games. One of the Torchbearers is Lucie Decosse.

The flame, having journeyed from Greece and arriving in Marseille on May 8, begins its magnificent voyage across the country. From the beautiful regions of Loire-Atlantique, Morbihan, and Finistère to the distant and diverse landscapes of French Guiana, each Torchbearer will contribute to this historic event.

As we anticipate the grand Opening Ceremony on July 26, we will spotlight the inspiring individuals who light the way in this monumental relay. This article focuses on the remarkable men and women representing the stages of Morbihan, Finistère, Loire-Atlantique, and French Guiana.

Stage 25 – Loire-Atlantique: Philippe Revillon

Philippe, a former Paralympic swimmer, is one of the exceptional individuals chosen to carry the torch through Loire-Atlantique. He competed in the Paralympic Games in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, where he proudly secured four medals: one silver and three bronze.

Since his competitive days, Philippe has dedicated himself to sharing his inspiring journey with young people, both non-disabled and disabled, across various educational levels. Swimming has provided him with immense physical and mental fulfillment, and the drive to achieve his competition goals has continually pushed him beyond his limits.

For Philippe, the Olympic Games epitomize the ultimate achievement for any athlete. By sharing his unique experiences, he highlights the electrifying nature of this global event, captivating both sports fans and non-sports fans alike. As he joins the ranks of Torchbearers, he reflects on how the 2024 Olympics odds stir excitement and anticipation in everyone involved.

Stage 26 – Morbihan: Emilie Frantz

Émilie is a determined woman who fights every day to improve life for her seven-year-old son, Gabriel. Gabriel has a rare neurodegenerative genetic disease, and Émilie established the "Gabriel Juste Exceptionnel" association to raise awareness about the disease and collect funds to support other families in similar situations.

Thanks to her tireless efforts, the association won the 2022 participatory budget project for Bain-de-Bretagne. This led to the creation of an inclusive playground, inaugurated on March 25, 2023, which is one of the first in Brittany.

The playground is a setting where children with and without disabilities can play together. It has equipment designed for children in wheelchairs, including adapted trampolines and roundabouts, as well as various swings. Through her association, Émilie exemplifies the spirit of inclusive sport and the strength of community.

Stage 27 – Finistère: Mariamma Merandon

Mariamma Merandon is a committed athlete who plays electric wheelchair football in Brest, where she became the French Nat 3 champion. Her journey into disabled sports started 10 years ago after she had a horse-riding accident.

In addition to football, she is also skilled at boccia and has competed in the French championships. She hopes to represent France at the Paralympics in the future. Passionate about the inclusion of people with disabilities in sports, Mariamma had started her studies in (STAPS) before her accident.

Despite her challenges, she earned both an MA and a BA in Sports Management, showing her determination and dedication to the world of sports.

Stage 28 – French Guiana: Lucie Décosse

Lucie Décosse, a gold medallist in judo from the London 2012 Olympics, is dedicated to promoting the importance of sports across France. In her role as a technical coach for the French Judo Federation, she leverages her expertise to train and mentor emerging judokas. Beyond her coaching role, Lucie is passionate about sustainability and environmental protection.

She works with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to support eco-friendly initiatives and raise awareness about environmental issues. Lucie’s dual commitment to sports and the environment makes her a true ambassador of positive change.
